A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
