Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
