European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
