Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
