Each time a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
