The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
