Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then found many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.

An important official commented the vandalism left him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
