Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
